Christmas is always about the baking at my house and this recipe is so good it has made it to the annual festive baking list.
It's mega fun to make although you need to follow a few tips to avoid getting chocolate smudges everywhere, I'm not sure that's a bad thing though. I'm sure Santa wouldn't mind.
I guarantee you every kid will squeal at the sight of it, all puffy and proud of itself, golden with egg wash and stripy with chocolate spread. I squealed myself..... several times.
It's a perfect idea for Christmas Breakfast too! You can make it the day before (fun for the kids) then cover in clingfilm and keep in the fridge overnight ready for a quick and easy bake Christmas morn!
Ingredients
2 x sheets (375 grams - 13.2 oz)) ready rolled puff pastry
100 grams nutella or chocolate spread
1 egg
icing sugar for decorating
Method
- Preheat the oven to 190 C/375 F Gas Mark 5
- Either use the enclosed baking paper that comes with the ready rolled puff pastry or line a flat baking tray with a reusable liner or baking paper.
- Unroll one of the puff pastry sheets and place on the baking sheet.
- Spread the nutella or chocolate spread over the puff pastry sheet as shown in the picture.
- Cut out a small star shape out of one corner and put to the side. This will be the star on the top.
- Unroll the second puff pastry sheet and place on top of the first one that is spread with chocolate.
- Cut the pastry into the shape of a Christmas tree (triangle) with a wide base and trunk. Pull away the excess pastry.
- Lightly score 2 lines down the middle of the triangle to form a tree trunk approx 3cm wide.
- Cut branches into the sides of the triangle, approximately 2cm wide. Leave the top 5cm or so as this will be covered with your pastry star.
- Taking each branch strip and turning it away from you twist each one a couple of times or so.
- Brush all over with egg wash generously. Bake for about fifteen minutes until puffy and golden brown.
- Dust with icing sugar for a festive finale.
- Tear and share baby....and have a fabulous Christmas.
Additional ingredients and flavour ideas
Grate some orange zest over the chocolate spread before adding the top layer of puff pastry
Sprinkle chopped hazelnuts over the chocolate spread as above.
You could add some extra chocolate chips in there too.
I absolutely love ready rolled puff pastry. It's delish plus you can throw together nibbles both sweet and savoury in an absolute instant. Christmas boom.
